Overview

Boavizta is a working group, set up as an association, on the environmental footprint of digital technology. Its environmental-footprint-data repository on GitHub collects the product carbon footprint sheets that manufacturers publish for their devices: one row per device, with the total and the share of each life stage. The data can be browsed on dataviz.boavizta.org.

The data is almost entirely taken from the manufacturers' sheets. The repository was last updated on 2023-02-23, and that state is the edition we load.

Methodology

How this works
  • Each value is the total printed by the manufacturer, in kg CO2e per device.
  • The total covers the whole life cycle, cradle to grave: manufacturing, transport, use and end of life. The use phase is the manufacturer's estimate for a region of use and a lifetime of its choosing. Across the published rows it is a median of about a quarter of the total: 17 % for a laptop, 82 % for a server, 98 % for a printer.
  • Where the manufacturer prints the use share, we split the total into two parts linked to it: the use phase, the total times the use share, and the embodied footprint (manufacturing, transport and end of life), the total times the rest. The two parts add up to the total exactly. They are worked out by open-climate.ai from the manufacturer's two numbers; the total stays the number the manufacturer printed.
  • The methods are the manufacturers' own and are not transparent. Most use MIT's PAIA method, which rests on studies that are not public and which Boavizta could not evaluate. Boavizta states that the data carries very large margins of error and is meant for orders of magnitude and for comparing models of the same manufacturer.
  • The global warming potentials used are not published, so the GWP vintage is unverified and the values cannot be restated on another GWP set.
  • Each total is one CO2e figure, served as a net total. It is not split by gas or into fossil and biogenic CO2.
  • The reference year is the year of the manufacturer's report, from 2013 to 2023. The 15 devices with no report date take the year they were added to the database, 2022. A model year in a device name, such as "- 2015" on an Apple product, tells which generation the device belongs to; it is not the reference year.
  • The geography is the region the manufacturer estimated the use phase for.
  • Every value is specific: one device of one manufacturer. The sheets are not environmental product declarations.

What we import

  • The US file of the repository, 1,226 rows: 1,222 devices, one total each. The 1,147 devices that print a use share also get a use part and an embodied part, so 3,516 factors in all.
  • Four Apple devices are printed twice with the same value: Watch SE 44mm, Watch Series 8 45mm, Watch Ultra and iPad 9th generation Wi-Fi + Cellular 64GB. Each keeps one factor; the second copy of the value is withheld.
  • The manufacturer is shown as the supplier: 12 in all, Dell, Lenovo, HP and Apple supplying most devices. Hewlett Packard Enterprise is kept apart from HP.
  • Geography, per device: Europe 587, the world 371, the United States 219, North America 44, Asia 1. The 113 devices with no region of use are placed in the world as a whole.
  • No standard classification code is published. The publisher's category (Workplace, Datacenter, Home) and sub-category (Laptop, Monitor, Desktop, Server, Smartphone and 13 more) are kept with each factor, with two variant spellings of a sub-category corrected. Every factor also carries the open-climate.ai category Electronics and ICT equipment, under manufactured goods.
  • There is no description per device. The publisher's comment, such as a note on storage variants, is kept as an applicability note on 16 devices.
  • Kept with each value in our archive, not served: the shares of manufacturing, transport and end of life (printed on fewer devices, and they do not always add up to the total, so we do not split on them), the manufacturer's error ratio, the lifetime, the yearly energy use, the weight, the assembly location and the technical specifications.
  • Not imported: the French file of the repository, a copy of the US file in which some names, values and links are corrupted, and the outputs of Boavizta's API models, which estimate footprints rather than report them.
  • Names are in English, as published.

Copyleft. The database is published under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0 and its individual contents under the Database Contents License (DbCL) 1.0. They allow any use, commercial use included, and redistribution, on condition of the notice and the share-alike terms below. Attribution: "Contains information from Boavizta environmental-footprint-data, which is made available under the Open Database License (ODbL)." Last verified 2026-10-07.

Share alike applies to the database. A database derived from Boavizta's, for example these factors extracted and normalised, must be shared under the ODbL if you make it public, and you must offer a machine-readable copy of it. A result you publish from it, such as an inventory or a report, must carry the notice above. Do not republish the values under a more permissive licence.

Limitations

  • Of the 1,226 printed values, 1,222 are rated low quality, because Boavizta itself recommends against using the data for accurate impact evaluations or to compare devices of different manufacturers. The other 4 are the repeated Apple copies, rated problematic and withheld. The 2,294 parts are rated low like their totals. Boavizta publishes no quality score. See how data quality is graded.
  • Every total includes the use phase. If you report the device's electricity separately, adding the total counts the use phase twice: use the embodied part instead. 75 devices print no use share, so they have no embodied part and only their total is served.
  • Europe is the region of the PAIA method, not the European Union of 27 countries.
  • A few values look wrong and are served as printed: the Seagate OneStor SP2584 Extensible Storage Platform at 190,000 kg, 7.6 times the next device; the Dell OptiPlex 7070 Ultra, whose printed manufacturing share is 7.76 times its total; and the Google Stadia Controller at 20 kg, far below the other gaming devices.
  • The repository has not been updated since 2023-02-23, so devices launched since are missing.

Changelog

  • 2026-10-07: edition of 2023-02-23 loaded.
  • 2026-10-08: each device that prints a use share gets a use part and an embodied part under its total.
