Overview

Ökobilanzdaten im Baubereich ("life cycle assessment data in the building sector") is the reference list Swiss public builders use to assess buildings. It is published by KBOB (the coordination conference of the construction and property services of Swiss public builders), ecobau and IPB, through the platform of the same name, whose stated mission is to make the data available "allen Interessierten kostenlos" (free of charge to anyone interested). For each material, technical system, energy carrier, transport service and disposal route it prints the environmental indicators per reference unit: kilograms, square metres, pieces, kWh, tonne-kilometres and so on.

We load version 9.0 of the list, released on 17 July 2026: one workbook with five data sheets (building materials, building services, energy, transport and disposal) and 815 records under 33 groups. The list itself is dated 2022 ("KBOB/ecobau-Liste 2022").

Methodology

How this works
  • A value is the greenhouse gas emissions per reference unit, in kg CO2e, as printed in the list's greenhouse gas column.
  • The global warming potentials are those of the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) over 100 years. The list prints no split by gas, so the values are not restated with newer potentials. Biogenic CO2 is counted at zero, as the list's explanations state: the values are on a biogenic-CO2-excluded basis.
  • Every value carries the year 2022, the year of the list and of its background data.
  • For building materials and building services the list prints two stages, production (cradle to gate) and disposal, and a total that is their sum. Transport to the site, installation and the use phase are not counted, and the factor says so. We load the total as the factor and each stage as a part of it.
  • For transport the list prints three stages: operation (the fuel or electricity, with its supply chain), the vehicle and the infrastructure (roads, rails, airports), each spread over the distance travelled. The total counts all three. Fuels for vehicles are counted from the well to the wheel.
  • Air transport: the list multiplies the emissions released at altitude by 2.5 to account for effects other than CO2 (the radiative forcing index, RFI, of 2.5). The 13 aircraft rows say so and carry the multiplier on their total and their operation stage; it cannot be removed from the printed values. The five helicopter rows carry no such statement.
  • Energy carriers are counted over their life cycle: fuels with their supply chain, and electricity from the grid with its transmission and distribution losses. On-site generation (photovoltaics) has no grid losses. Fuels for heating are printed per kWh on the gross calorific value, as the list's footnote states.
  • For grid electricity, the list's Swiss production mix, Swiss consumption mix, European ENTSO-E mix, Swiss supplier mix and certified green power carry the matching mix and Scope 2 method; one plant type delivered over the grid is location-based.
  • The region is Switzerland for every row, except the European ENTSO-E mix and the two German high-speed train rows.

List vintage: a fixed 2022, the year of the KBOB/ecobau-Liste 2022 and its UVEK DQRv2:2022 background data; the edition is V9.0.

What we import

  • 1,773 factors and 1,773 values from the 815 printed records: 809 totals and 964 stage parts (production and disposal for 346 materials and 46 building services, operation, vehicle and infrastructure for 60 transport services).
  • Not imported: the 4 group headings that print no values, one record whose every indicator is empty and one record that prints neither a unit nor a non-zero value. Each is archived with its reason.
  • Units: 305 totals per kg, 224 per m², 101 per kWh, 25 per m² of energy reference area, 22 per piece, 19 per kilometre, 19 per passenger-kilometre, 18 per metre, 14 per tonne-kilometre, 13 per kWp of photovoltaic capacity, 13 per m² of photovoltaic panel, 12 per kWh on the gross calorific value, 11 per litre (printed per m³), 6 per m² of solar collector, 5 per hour and 2 per kWh of storage capacity.
  • Each factor carries the publisher's group, its German and French names as printed, and an open-climate.ai category. The list's footnotes are kept where they belong: the reference size or mounting of a window frame, what production or useful heat includes, and the ventilation note on the rows given per energy reference area. Every factor has an English usage note written by open-climate.ai.
  • Kept with each value but not served: the list's other indicators (environmental impact points UBP'21, primary energy and biogenic carbon), the disposal route cross-reference and every printed cell.

Restricted. The publisher's page and the workbook state no licence and no terms of reuse, and the page carries a copyright notice of KBOB. The list is free of charge, but a price is not a grant of reuse. Until the platform grants reuse in writing, the factors are listed and searchable with their descriptions, and the values are not shown on the public site. Limitations

  • The list prints no uncertainty and no quality indicator per record. Of the 1,773 values, 1,628 are rated medium, set by the library prior; 132 are rated very low because their unit depends on the building or the installation (per m² of energy reference area, of panel or of collector, or per kWh on the gross calorific value); 12 disposal rows that print zero because nothing is disposed of (foundation piles left in the ground, dewatering) carry that reason; one disposal row that prints zero for straw-bale walls is rated problematic, since composting or burning straw cannot emit nothing. How quality is rated.
  • A total for a material counts production and disposal only, so it reads lower than a cradle-to-grave figure that adds transport, installation and use.
  • The air transport values include the 2.5 multiplier; compare them only with values that state the same treatment.
  • Some records are manufacturer-specific rather than averages. The list marks them by shading, which the workbook does not carry, so they are not flagged here.
  • One edition is loaded.
