Overview

Plastics Recyclers Europe is the association of European plastics recyclers. With the software and consulting firm GreenDelta, it built life cycle assessments of recycled polymers from recyclers' own site data, under the EU research project PRIMUS (Horizon Europe grant 101057067). Version 1.0 was released on 3 September 2025 as 50 EcoProfile reports, one PDF each, published on the openLCA Nexus page of the EcoProfiles and mirrored by GreenDelta.

Each report covers 1 kg of one recycled polymer in one form (flakes, the shredded and washed material, or pellets, the re-extruded granulate), for one geography and one system boundary. It prints the polymer's results on 17 impact categories, its energy use and the data behind it: the number of recycling sites sampled, the data year and the share of European recycling capacity those sites represent.

Methodology

How this works
  • The results are computed with the EF 3.1 impact method of the European Commission. Its Climate change category follows the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), 100-year GWP. The value we serve is that Climate change result, as printed.
  • The Climate change result is a single total: fossil, biogenic and land-use emissions together, with no split printed. We serve it as a net total, not as a fossil-only figure, and mark it so.
  • Waste enters the recycling chain burden-free (the cut-off approach). The emissions of the product the plastic first served belong to that product, not to the recyclate.
  • Two system boundaries are published. Cradle-to-gate covers the collection and sorting of the post-consumer waste, then mechanical recycling at the recycler. Gate-to-gate covers the recycling step only: the collection and sorting of the waste before it reaches the recycler are left out.
  • The recycling step counts the additives and chemicals, electricity and fuels, the transport of incoming materials and wastes, internal transport, the treatment of residual waste and wastewater, and the recycling plant itself (a 50-year facility). The product leaves the gate unpacked: its packaging, use and end of life are not included.
  • The foreground data are from recycling sites in 2022, from 2 to 10 sites per report. European reports state the share of European recycling capacity they represent, from 2.86% to 29.6%. Background processes such as electricity come from a commercial database that is not part of the published reports.
  • Every result comes with a Monte Carlo standard deviation, 6% to 15% of the value. It covers the site data only, not the background database.

Data year: 2022, the year of the inventory data behind every recycled-plastic profile. No validity window is printed.

What we import

  • 50 factors and 50 values, all per kg of recycled polymer, reference year 2022.
  • 8 polymers: polypropylene (PP) 14, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) 10, high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) 10, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) 4, mixed polyolefins (MPO) 4, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) 4, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) 2 and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) 2. 27 are pellets, 23 flakes.
  • The feedstock is named on each factor: electrical and electronic waste for ABS and HIPS, electrical and household waste for PP and PVC, household packaging for LDPE and MPO, bottles for PET, and packaging, agricultural and construction waste for HDPE.
  • 14 cradle-to-gate factors, all for Europe (the EU27 with Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom).
  • 36 gate-to-gate factors: 14 for Europe and 22 for single countries (France 6, the United Kingdom 6, the Netherlands 6, Austria 2, Germany 2). No country has a cradle-to-gate factor.
  • Each European gate-to-gate factor sits under its cradle-to-gate twin as a part of it, so the two are never added together. The gate-to-gate value is 44% to 70% of its twin.
  • Factors are placed in the open-climate.ai category tree under materials, polymers and rubber.
  • The 16 other impact categories and the energy table are kept with each value as source data and not served as factors.
  • Not imported: the openLCA databases behind the reports, which require an account and embed a commercial background database.

Limitations

  • A gate-to-gate factor leaves out the collection and sorting of the waste, which is 30% to 56% of the cradle-to-gate burden where both are published. Use it only when you account for collection and sorting elsewhere. For a recycled polymer bought on the market, the European cradle-to-gate factor is the complete one.
  • The total includes biogenic and land-use emissions. Next to fossil-only factors it reads slightly high.
  • The ± figure covers the site data only, and the sites sampled represent between 2.86% and 29.6% of European capacity. These values are rated medium quality, not high.
  • Pellets and flakes come from different site samples. A pellets value can be lower than the flakes value of the same polymer, and neither can be derived from the other.
  • The country factors are gate-to-gate only. Do not add the European collection and sorting share to a country factor: that share differs from stream to stream.
  • These factors are not comparable with virgin polymer data from other sources. The publisher states that a direct comparison was not possible.
  • How quality tiers are set.
