Glas - recycling

Glass is sometimes separated by colour at the point of collection. At the recycling company, large contaminants such as plastic bottles are manually removed from the glass waste, after which the glass passes through a crusher and a sieve. Contaminants such as metal, plastics, porcelain and cork are then detected and removed. Food residues in the glass waste are removed by storing the glass outdoors for several weeks, allowing the organic material to decompose. The homogeneous, clean stream of glass cullet is sold to the glass industry, which uses the glass cullet as a raw material for new glass products. The use of glass cullet in glass production reduces the energy requirement. CE Delft has not received any data on the recycling of flat glass.
