Emission factor from DCE 2024

Wood and similar wood wastes - Paper, Pulp and Print

Denmark · Combustion · Any year

Each kilowatt-hour of this fuel counts as 0.00795 kg CO₂e from burning it. open-climate.ai worked this figure out from values published by DCE, for use in any year.

Value per kWh, net calorific value

0.00795kgCO₂e/kWh

Where 0.00795 comes from

Derived by open-climate.ai

open-climate.ai adds up the gases DCE publishes, each weighted by its warming potential.

Reporting this kilowatt-hour under the GHG Protocol

Scope 1 0.00795

You burn the fuel, so its combustion is your Scope 1.

What this number covers

The path of one kilowatt-hour of this fuel, from the wood it is made from to your boiler.

  1. Your meter

1 kWh used. The factor is per kWh measured here.

  2. Burning it

In your boiler or stove: mostly CO₂ the wood took up as it grew, with a little CH₄ and N₂O

    0.00795

= 0.00795 per kWh

Outside this boundary

  • Producing and delivering the fuel
  • Making the boiler that burns it
  • Building the pipelines and the network

DCE counts only burning the fuel, not producing and delivering it or the things built to extract, move and burn it.

Gases

Basis: Excl. biogenic CO₂

  • Biogenic CO₂0.37297.9%
  • Nitrous oxide (N₂O)0.006881.8%
  • Biogenic methane (CH₄)0.001070.3%

Σ 0.00107 + 0.00688 + 0.372 = 0.380002, more than the 0.00795 total DCE prints.

Each gas is converted to CO₂e with AR6 100-year warming potentials; biogenic CO₂ and land-use carbon are left out, while methane from biogenic sources is counted.

About this factor

From DCE

The CO2 emission factor for wood is an estimated avarage value based on the following CO2 emission factors: Firewood 98.7 kg/GJ, wood chips 105.6 kg/GJ and wood waste 99.7 kg/GJ. The different emission factors are based water content data for each of the wood types.
