ERASM - ERASM (A.I.S.E. / CESIO)

Cradle-to-gate greenhouse gas emissions of 15 surfactants, 16 of their precursors and 6 tropical oils, per kg of active substance, as produced for the European detergent industry in 2011, from the Surfactant Life Cycle and Ecofootprinting (SLE) project of ERASM, published open access in the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment.

Overview

ERASM (Environmental & Health Risk Assessment and Management of Surfactants) is a research partnership of the European detergent and surfactant industries: A.I.S.E., the international association for soaps, detergents and maintenance products, and CESIO, the European committee of organic surfactants and their intermediates. Its SLE project, closed in 2014, updated the surfactant life cycle inventories the industry had relied on since the 1994 CEFIC-Franklin study.

The results were published in 2017 as Schowanek et al., "New and updated life cycle inventories for surfactants used in European detergents: summary of the ERASM surfactant life cycle and ecofootprinting project", International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment 23, 867-886 (2018). PE International (now thinkstep) built the models; independent experts reviewed the study throughout, as ISO 14040 and 14044 require for a critical review.

Methodology

How this works
  • Values are kg CO2e per kg of active substance, not per kg of product. Most surfactants and precursors leave the factory as aqueous solutions or pastes: for a product sold at 70% active matter, multiply by 0.7 to get a value per kg of product. ERASM prints per tonne; we divide by 1,000.
  • Cradle to gate: from the extraction of natural resources to the factory gate of the producer, including the transport of materials to production and the energy used. Delivery to customers, use and end of life are outside. Each factor states this boundary: raw materials, manufacturing, transport to production, purchased electricity and upstream fuel are in, delivery to customers is out, and packaging is marked as not stated, because the paper says nothing about it.
  • Average data, from industry averages: for each major production step at least three companies (a "trio") supplied data, completed with literature or process data where no company data existed. The data describe production in 2011, modelled with the GaBi software and background database.
  • GWP: IPCC 2007 (AR4) 100-year values, as ERASM printed them (CML 2001 baseline method). For the 31 surfactants and precursors we also serve an AR6 restatement, recomputed from the gas split ERASM prints. The 6 oils have no gas split, so their AR6 view carries the AR4 value unchanged and says so.
  • Every value is a net total: carbon taken up by plants counts as negative, emissions from direct land use change (land converted to plantations) and from drained peat land count as positive. Indirect land use change is outside. Six values are negative: coconut oil and refined coconut oil, coconut oil methyl ester, beef tallow, C16-C18 fatty alcohol from tallow, and cocamide diethanolamine.
  • For the 31 surfactants and precursors, ERASM prints the split into biogenic CO2, fossil CO2, CO2 from land use change, methane and nitrous oxide; we carry it with each value. For the 6 oils it prints the total only.
  • 28 values are European averages (the 27 EU member states of 2011), 9 are global production mixes: the 6 oils and the three methyl esters made from them.
  • ERASM publishes no data quality rating and no uncertainty, so no data-quality scheme is attached.

Data year: 2011, the production year the surfactant inventories model, on every factor; not the 2014 project close, the 2017 data release or the 2018 paper.

What we import

  • The SLE results as printed in the 2018 paper (Tables 3, 4 and 5): 37 factors with one value each, all for the year 2011.
  • 16 precursors (Table 3), 15 surfactants in four families, anionic, non-ionic, cationic and amphoteric (Table 4), and 6 crude and refined palm, palm kernel and coconut oils (Table 5).
  • Values range from -2.036 (crude coconut oil) to 4.894 (3-dimethylamino-propylamine). Ethylene oxide is 1.598, linear alkylbenzene sulphonic acid 1.746, crude palm oil 2.947.
  • Every number is read from the paper by a parser that stops on any change of layout, then checked against the ILCD datasets ERASM publishes beside the paper: all 37 totals agree within 2 kg CO2e per tonne.
  • One cell is corrected. The paper prints 2,337 kg per tonne of CO2 from land use change for the C12-C14 alcohol ethoxylate with 3 EO, which does not add up to its printed total of 2,524; the printed total minus the four other printed gas columns gives 2,378.7, which ERASM's ILCD dataset confirms. We load the figure derived from the paper.
  • Kept in our archive, not served as factors: primary energy demand, the other impact indicators the paper prints, and the printed text of each row.
  • Not imported: Table 5's four rows that repeat Table 3 (palm oil, palm kernel oil and coconut oil methyl esters, and beef tallow); the four datasets ERASM never published for confidentiality reasons; the ILCD datasets themselves, whose terms restrict them to internal use.
  • Every factor has an open-climate.ai category, at two levels: materials, then chemicals (30 factors), and food and agriculture, then processed food (7). ERASM has no classification of its own.
  • Names are ERASM's, in English. The usage definitions are written by open-climate.ai with language models; they are not ERASM's.

Open. The paper is published under CC BY 4.0, which allows commercial use, modification and redistribution with attribution: "Schowanek D, Borsboom-Patel T, Bouvy A, et al. (2018) New and updated life cycle inventories for surfactants used in European detergents: summary of the ERASM surfactant life cycle and ecofootprinting project. Int J Life Cycle Assess 23:867-886. doi:10.1007/s11367-017-1384-x. Licensed under CC BY 4.0." Our changes: values per kg instead of per tonne, and an AR6 restatement.

The ILCD datasets on erasm.org carry their own terms, for internal use only; open-climate.ai uses them only to check its reading of the paper and does not redistribute them. Last verified 2026-10-12.

Limitations

  • The data describe production in 2011. Processes, energy mixes and plantation practices have changed since; ERASM has not updated them.
  • A value per kg of active substance is not a value per kg of the product you buy: check the concentration on the product sheet.
  • The palm-based values carry the land use change and peat emissions of the plantations behind the 2011 supply; certified or other sourcing can differ widely.
  • Indirect land use change is outside every value.
  • All 37 values are rated medium quality, the level we give a critically reviewed industry average when the publisher prints no rating of its own. How quality tiers are set.
  • Under AR6, the methane of two surfactants, C16-C18 triethanolamine esterquats and C12-C14 amine oxide, is partly biogenic but is restated at the fossil factor, which overstates their AR6 values by less than 0.01 kg CO2e per kg.
