Overview

FoodGWP (in Finnish, Ilmastovaikutusaineisto ruokapalvelusektorille) gives one climate figure per raw ingredient in Finland's national food composition database, Fineli, so that kitchens and caterers can estimate the footprint of a recipe or a menu. Luke publishes it as one data file on Fairdata, with a method report (URN:ISBN:978-952-380-961-1).

Each value is a consumption mix for Finland: the domestic product and the imported product, weighted by their share of what is eaten in Finland. Names come in Finnish, English and Swedish.

Methodology

How this works
  • Values are kg CO2e per kg of raw ingredient, characterised with IPCC AR6 100-year factors. They range from 0.12 to 52.08 kg CO2e per kg.
  • The boundary is cradle to wholesale: farming, processing and transport to the Finnish wholesaler. Retail, the kitchen and waste are outside it.
  • Land use change is excluded. Luke states this.
  • Transport to Finland is included. Luke does not say whether packaging is included, so packaging is shown as not stated.
  • Luke does not say how biogenic CO2 is treated. We record the totals as excluding it, which is our reading, not a statement from Luke.
  • About half of the ingredients have their own calculated value. The others take the average of their ingredient class, and the file marks them as such.
  • Data years are mixed: the crop data run from 2018 to 2022 and the animal product studies from 2021 to 2023. We date every value 2024, the year of the edition.

Publication year: 2024, the year edition 1.09 was published. The data behind it spans several years (crops 2018-2022, animal life cycle assessments 2021 and 2023), so do not read it as a data year.

What we import

  • Version 1.09, issued 2024-09-24, the only public edition.
  • 729 factors: 639 ingredients with their own value, 3 ingredients whose printed value differs from their class average, and 87 class averages (77 ingredient classes and 10 food use classes).
  • The 591 ingredients that only repeat their class average are not loaded as separate factors. Each one points to the class factor that carries its value, and the ingredient names of a class are kept as search terms on that class factor.
  • 12 ingredients are priced at another form of the same food: coffee drinks at the value of roasted coffee, cooked pulses at the value of dried pulses. They are rated very low quality and say so. For the same reason, the coffee class is rated very low and the pulses class low.
  • Most values are rated medium quality. The 3 ingredients whose value differs from their class average are rated low. How quality tiers are set.
  • Ingredient names are Luke's English, Finnish and Swedish. Class names are Luke's Finnish, with our English and French translations.

Limitations

  • Raw ingredients only: no prepared dishes and no organic products. A recipe has to be built from its ingredients.
  • Values describe the Finnish consumption mix. They are not specific to a brand, a farm or another country, and a figure for Finnish production cannot be told apart from one for imports.
  • Luke advises against combining these values with figures from other sources, because methods and boundaries differ. Luke also accepts no liability for their use.
  • An ingredient that takes its class average carries the footprint of a typical member of the class, not its own.
  • The tea rows (1.55 kg CO2e per kg) do not say whether they mean dry leaves or the brewed drink.
