Overview

The Database milieubelasting voedingsmiddelen (environmental impact of foods) gives life cycle results for foods bought in Dutch supermarkets, from bread and cheese to frozen snacks and drinks. RIVM, the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, publishes it as one workbook on rivm.nl. The life cycle data were updated in 2023 by Mérieux NutriSciences | Blonk for RIVM, and their method report describes the model as RIVM database 3.0.

Each food is an average product as sold in the Netherlands, not a brand. One food can appear several times, once per storage condition and packaging (a jar, a carton, a plastic tray), and at the plate once per way of preparing it (boiled, pan fried, deep fried).

Methodology

How this works
  • Values are kg CO2e per kg of food. At the distribution centre and the shelf the kilogram is the food as sold. At the plate it is the food as eaten: prepared, edible part only, so a drink is counted per kg of drink, not per kg of dry powder.
  • The three points are cumulative. The distribution centre covers farming, processing, packaging, transport and storage at the distribution centre, with the food lost on the way. The shelf adds the supermarket. The plate adds storage at home, cutting losses, cooking and the waste treatment of the packaging and of the food thrown away.
  • RIVM computes the climate indicator with the ReCiPe 2016 method. It counts emissions from direct land use change, following PAS 2050-1, and from drained peat soils.
  • RIVM prints no GWP set and no treatment of biogenic CO2 per row. We record the values as IPCC AR5 100-year figures that exclude biogenic CO2, the defaults of the method RIVM names. This is our reading, not a statement printed in the file.
  • Discarded packaging gets credits for recycled material and for the heat and electricity recovered when it is incinerated. These credits are counted at the plate, where the packaging is thrown away.
  • Transport from the supermarket to the consumer's home is not included. Refrigerant leaks during storage and in the shop are not counted either.
  • Co-products share the burden by economic value, except milk, which uses biophysical allocation.
  • Values run from 0.04 to 29.4 kg CO2e per kg at the distribution centre, from 0.09 to 29.7 at the shelf, and from 0.001 (tap water) to 32.6 (pan fried beef roast) at the plate.

Edition year: 2024, the year RIVM published the workbook (its LCA data were updated in 2023). The database prints no data year per food.

What we import

  • Version 23 September 2024, the current edition.
  • 1,157 factors for 379 products, each a food in one storage condition and one packaging: 374 at the distribution centre, 374 at the shelf and 409 at the plate.
  • Only the climate indicator is served. RIVM's five other indicators (acidification, freshwater and marine eutrophication, land use, water use) are kept with the source row but not served.
  • Returnable PET mineral water is printed three times under one name, once per brand. It is loaded as one factor with the value printed twice, and the third row, which differs, is kept as a traced skip. 6 rows are skipped this way, all of them this one product.
  • Each factor keeps RIVM's food group (4 main groups, 24 groups) and the NEVO code of the Dutch food composition table when RIVM prints one (1,127 of 1,157 factors).
  • Names are RIVM's English. RIVM's caveat on comparisons (see Limitations) ships with every factor, in Dutch as printed and in our English translation.
  • Every value is rated medium quality: there is no critical review and no per-row rating. How quality tiers are set.
  • Not imported: the 2019 workbook, which RIVM says cannot be compared with this one, and the background life cycle inventories behind the results, which RIVM does not publish.

Open. RIVM publishes the data under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0): "De gegevens over de milieubelasting van voedingsmiddelen zijn openbaar en vrij te gebruiken". The licence allows commercial use, derived works and redistribution with attribution, and asks you to state any change you make. RIVM prints no credit line, so we use: "RIVM, Database milieubelasting voedingsmiddelen, versie 23 september 2024 (data: Mérieux NutriSciences | Blonk), CC BY 4.0".

Limitations

  • RIVM states that no critical review as specified in ISO 14040 was carried out, so these figures must not be used to compare individual foods, such as an apple and a pear. Product categories, such as vegetables and fruit, can be compared.
  • Values at the plate are per kg as eaten. Never convert them to or from the per kg as sold values of the other two points.
  • Values describe the average Dutch supermarket product. They are not specific to a brand, a farm or another country.
  • The trip home from the supermarket is outside every value.
  • Returnable PET mineral water folds three brands into one factor.
  • Last verified against RIVM's workbook and method report: 2026-10-13.
