Emission factor from BAFU 01-2026

Waste in municipal waste incineration plants (KVA)

Switzerland · Combustion · Any year

Each kilowatt-hour of this fuel counts as 0.167 kg CO₂e from burning it. BAFU gives one figure, for use in any year.

Value per kWh, net calorific value

0.167kgCO₂e/kWh

Where 0.167 comes from

  • Fossil emissions
    Scope 10.167100%
  • Biogenic CO₂
    Outside the scopes0.165beside

Σ 0.167: the fossil emissions are the total. BAFU reports 0.165 of biogenic CO₂ beside it, never in it.

Reporting this kilowatt-hour under the GHG Protocol

Scope 1 0.167

You burn the fuel, so its combustion is your Scope 1.

What this number covers

The path of one kilowatt-hour of this fuel, from the waste it is made from to the boiler.

  1. Your meter

1 kWh used. The factor is per kWh measured here.

  2. Burning it

In the boiler or kiln: CO₂ from the fossil and biogenic carbon in the waste, with a little CH₄ and N₂O

    0.167

= 0.167 per kWh

Outside this boundary

  • Producing and delivering the fuel
  • Making the boiler that burns it
  • Building the pipelines and the network

BAFU counts only burning the fuel, not producing and delivering it or the things built to extract, move and burn it.

Gases

  • Fossil CO₂e0.167
  • Biogenic CO₂e0.165

The CO₂e leaves biogenic CO₂ and land-use carbon out; methane from biogenic sources is counted.

About this factor

From BAFU
