Overview

WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) is a UK charity. It publishes the UK Food & Drink Emission Factors Database as a workbook to support its Scope 3 measurement and reporting protocols for UK food and drink businesses.

It is a meta-database: WRAP does not model the products itself but gathers factors from other sources, including HESTIA, FAO's GLEAM, GFLI, Poore & Nemecek, Clune et al., Frankowska et al., Foodsteps, CIEL, HCC, Bord Bia, Cranfield and Agribalyse. Each factor keeps the name of the source it came from.

Methodology

How this works
  • Values are kg CO2e per kg of product, or per litre for liquid products.
  • Factors are published by life cycle stage and nested as WRAP sums them: the farm gate total contains land use change, feed and farm; the processing gate total contains the farm gate plus processing, packaging and transport. Each stage is linked to the total it belongs to, so stages are never added on top of their total.
  • Every total is net of the removals inside it. 17 values are negative, most of them land use change credits.
  • The GWP basis is recorded only where a source states it: IPCC AR6 for HESTIA and AR4 for Bord Bia. Every other source is recorded as unknown, including the two that name the IPCC Third Assessment Report.
  • 287 factors are per kg of a qualified reference mass rather than the product as bought, such as bone-free meat or shell-free nuts. The label is kept verbatim.
  • Data quality is WRAP's 1 to 5 score, given per source database, not per factor, and on 3 of its 5 criteria only. HESTIA's single-product factors carry a rating word instead.
  • The reference year is the publishing date of the source database, or the edition year where none is published. For HESTIA, which gives a year range, it is the first year of the range.
  • The region is the origin of production. FAO's GLEAM regions are kept as their own regions.

Mixed: the source database's Scorecard publishing date on most factors, and the start of the HESTIA range on 722 of them.

What we import

  • The v2.0 workbook, dated 2024-03-28.
  • 3,897 factors: 3,156 from the full factor table, 19 found only in the refined table, and 722 greenhouse gas values from HESTIA (642 contributions for single products and 80 totals for multi-ingredient products).
  • Not imported: the 3,172 rows taken from Agribalyse, which open-climate.ai already serves directly at a finer grain; HESTIA's other impact indicators (eutrophication, acidification, land, water, biodiversity); refined rows that repeat the full table; 3 exact duplicates; 5 rows on regions with no defined membership ("South America", "Australia and New Zealand", "British Isles"); the pivot tabs, which restate the loaded data; and the unit conversion tab. Each is kept in our archive.
  • French names are machine translated.

Restricted. WRAP's terms and conditions allow copying content only for your own use in the UK, or with WRAP's written consent. They forbid hosting the content elsewhere, making derivative works and commercial use, and confine every use to the UK. Some upstream sources (Foodsteps, Frankowska et al., Poore & Nemecek, Clune et al.) have not been cleared for reuse either.

open-climate.ai lists these factors with their metadata; the values are withheld until the publisher agrees to their publication. The credit line is: "UK Food & Drink Emission Factors Database v2.0, WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme)."

Limitations

  • About 81 % of the factors have no stated GWP vintage, so they cannot be restated in AR6. Summing them with other libraries mixes vintages.
  • 893 factors include transport in their total. If you also account for freight separately, you count it twice.
  • Only four source databases and HESTIA report land use change as a separate stage. For the other nine, whether it is inside the total cannot be checked.
  • The quality score rates the source database, not the individual factor, so most factors land in the low band.
  • Two Foodsteps almond totals are net negative. This is plausible orchard sequestration, but check before quoting one.
  • WRAP revises earlier values between editions without flagging them, and has published nothing since March 2024.
