About this factor

Description by open-climate.ai

Added by open-climate.ai based on AIB's data. AIB publishes the emissions of generating electricity in Iceland but not the emissions of the electricity lost in transmission and distribution; this factor estimates them. Method: AIB's location-based generation factor for 2025 (0.0002 kg CO2e/kWh, production mix) multiplied by L / (1 - L), where L is the share of electricity entering the grid that is lost before it reaches users: 3.02 % in 2024, from Eurostat energy balances (nrg_bal_c). Under the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance (Appendix B), losses are reported with the location-based factor unless certificates were bought to cover them, so every market-based value of this factor, a green contract included, carries the same loss value. Assumptions: the lost electricity has the average emission intensity of the grid; the loss share of 2024 stands for 2025. Quality: rated low because the method's calibration error is 86.2 %; the method itself is capped at medium because the loss share is a national statistic, not a measurement of this factor. Sources: AIB (AIB terms of use, attribution required); Eurostat energy balances (nrg_bal_c) (CC BY 4.0, loss share computed from distribution losses and electricity available for final consumption). Not published or endorsed by AIB or Eurostat.
