Overview

Guarantees of origin are the certificates that prove where electricity came from. Each year the AIB publishes the residual mix of European countries: the mix of electricity left once all guarantees of origin claimed by consumers have been taken out. The results are on aib-net.org.

A consumer who claims no guarantee of origin uses the residual mix for market-based Scope 2 reporting. It stops renewable attributes that were already sold from being counted twice.

Methodology

How this works
  • Values are direct carbon dioxide from generation, published in g CO2 per kWh; we serve them in kg CO2 per kWh.
  • AIB counts direct emissions only: no life cycle stages, no methane or nitrous oxide, and no biogenic carbon. No GWP applies, so the number is the same under every IPCC assessment report.
  • Each country has one factor with up to four mixes. The production mix is location-based. The residual mix, the total supplier mix and the green mix are market-based.
  • The green mix is electricity backed by guarantees of origin, at 0. AIB does not print it: open-climate.ai adds it beside each residual mix and marks it as assigned, because 0 is the GHG Protocol's generation value for a certificate-backed kilowatt-hour, not an estimate.
  • The residual mix is computed with AIB's Shifted Issuing Based methodology, which accounts for guarantees of origin traded across borders.
  • The default is the residual mix. Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands publish no residual mix, because all their electricity is disclosed; there the default is the total supplier mix.
  • The reference year is the year the mixes describe, not the year of publication.

Data year: the results year of the European Residual Mixes publication, not its publication year.

What we import

  • The European Residual Mixes 2025, released 2026-05-28.
  • 34 countries and 130 values: 34 production mixes, 34 supplier mixes, 31 residual mixes and 31 green mixes.
  • Values as published, at generation. No published number is changed.
  • Not imported: the composition of each residual mix (renewable, nuclear, fossil and untracked shares), the radioactive waste figures, which are kept in our archive, and the per-technology emission factors AIB uses in its calculation, which are under a third-party licence.
  • AIB publishes no factor names. Ours are generated in English and machine translated into French.

AIB prints the generation leg only. Beside it, open-climate.ai adds three legs AIB never printed, each as its own factor marked as an estimate: grid losses, the fuel chain (extracting, refining and transporting the fuel the plants burn) and the fuel chain of the losses. They are computed by a stated rule from AIB's value, the loss shares of Eurostat, DUKES (Great Britain) and SFOE (Switzerland), and Ember's generation mix, and a delivered total sums each mix with its legs. Every leg and total is rated low quality. Iceland gets the loss leg only: its 2025 mix has no fossil generation to weight the fuel chain. How the legs are estimated.

Open. AIB's residual mix FAQ allows use of the data provided AIB is attributed as the source. There is no non-commercial or ShareAlike clause, so commercial use and redistribution are allowed with attribution. Limitations

  • Values are carbon dioxide only, not a full CO2e total. They are not directly comparable with life cycle grid factors.
  • AIB's values hold no upstream emissions or grid losses. The legs we add fill that gap as estimates, at low quality; leave out estimated factors to keep AIB's numbers only.
  • In Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands the default is a supplier mix, not a residual mix, and it is lower than the production mix (the Netherlands: 0.099 against 0.240 kg CO2 per kWh). Filter on the mix when you compare countries.
  • A green mix value of 0 applies only to electricity covered by cancelled guarantees of origin.
  • A green contract's delivered total is not 0: its loss leg and fuel chain come on top of the 0.
  • AIB publishes no uncertainty for its results.
  • Only the 2025 edition is loaded so far.

Changelog

  • 2026-09-25: estimated legs for grid losses and the fuel chain, and delivered totals, added beside each mix; the green zeros marked as added by open-climate.ai.
  • 2026-09-10: green mix zeros rated at the same quality as the other mixes.
  • 2026-09-02: all four mixes served; the production and green mixes were not reachable before.
  • 2026-07-31: total supplier mix reclassified from location-based to market-based.
  • 2026-07-29: 2025 edition loaded.
