Overview

Ember compiles national statistics into one global electricity dataset, from 1985 to the latest full year where the country data reach that far. It is published on ember-energy.org and updated several times a year.

We serve its emissions intensity per kWh generated, for the whole grid mix and for nine power sources: coal, gas, other fossil, nuclear, hydro, wind, solar, bioenergy and other renewables.

Methodology

How this works
  • Intensities are published in grams of CO2e per kWh generated; we serve them in kg CO2e per kWh.
  • They are lifecycle figures: upstream methane, supply chains and plant manufacturing are included, for all gases, over a 100-year horizon.
  • Grid losses are not included, because the denominator is electricity generated, not delivered.
  • Biogenic CO2 from bioenergy is part of the total.
  • Ember does not state which IPCC assessment report its GWPs come from, so the GWP basis shows as not stated.
  • The year of a value is the generation year.

Data year: the year the electricity was generated, not the year the factor was published.

What we import

  • The yearly global generation file, release of 2026-07-28, covering 1985 to 2025.
  • 209 countries, plus the world, the European Union and the continents.
  • One factor per area and power source, with one value per year.
  • Not imported: net imports (always zero), aggregated sources that overlap each other (clean, fossil, renewables and similar), country groups whose membership is not published or not in our registry (OECD, G20, G7, ASEAN, African Union, MENA), zero or negative intensities, and years with negative generation. Each excluded row is kept in our archive with its reason.
  • French names are machine translated.

Open. Ember publishes its data under CC BY 4.0, which allows commercial use and redistribution with attribution. Ember gives no attribution text, so we use: "Ember (2026), Yearly Electricity Data. Licensed under CC BY 4.0."

Limitations

  • For solar, hydro, bioenergy, other renewables and other fossil, Ember uses global lifecycle estimates from the IPCC (AR5, 2014), the same number in every country. More than half of the factors carry such a global value, not a country figure.
  • Ember itself says bioenergy intensities are very likely a significant underestimate.
  • These are generation figures. For purchased electricity, grid losses must be added.
  • Ember restates past years when national statistics change. Cite the release you used, not only the year.
  • The European Union aggregate uses today's 27 members for every year.

Changelog

  • 2026-09-14: boundary relabelled Energy lifecycle.
  • 2026-08-05: two factors that existed only on negative generation removed.
  • 2026-08-05: release of 2026-07-28 loaded.
