Overview

Agribalyse gives environmental indicators for the food products eaten in France, from raw farm products to prepared dishes. ADEME publishes the aggregated results as open data on data.ademe.fr.

Each product is an average product as consumed in France, not a brand. Seasonal, air-freighted, delivered, prepared and packaged variants of one food are separate products. The Agribalyse records that ADEME also publishes in its Base Carbone are served only from this library.

Methodology

How this works
  • Values are kg CO2e per kg of product as consumed, characterised with IPCC AR5 100-year factors.
  • The climate total is net: it counts fossil emissions, biogenic emissions and land use change. It is split by carbon origin (fossil, biogenic, land use change), not by gas.
  • Land use change can be negative where land takes up carbon, for example on afforested land. These 141 values keep their sign.
  • The life cycle has six stages: agriculture, processing, packaging, transport, store and consumption. Each gate (farm, processing, packaging, distribution, store, consumer) is the sum of the stages before it.
  • Every product carries ADEME's data quality rating (DQR), on a scale of 1 to 5.

Unattributed: a fixed 2020 that no published AGRIBALYSE source ties to either a data year or an edition year. Do not read it as a data year.

What we import

  • Edition 3.2, released 2024-11-01: the summary file and the detail by stage file.
  • Every product gives 12 factors: six gate totals and six stage contributions, 29,412 factors in all.
  • Each gate splits into the next narrower gate plus the one stage it adds.
  • The consumer total is the published summary figure. The narrower gates are built from the detail by stage file.
  • Not imported: the 23 indicators other than climate change, and the full life cycle inventory, which carries third-party licence terms.
  • Names are ADEME's French and English, with mistranslated English names corrected.

Open. The aggregated indicator files are published under the Etalab Open Licence 2.0, which allows commercial use, derived works and redistribution with attribution: "Source ADEME, données AGRIBALYSE". The terms also ask you to state the date of the last update.

The full life cycle inventory behind these results is licensed separately. We do not import it.

Limitations

  • Values describe food as consumed in France. They are not specific to a brand, a farm or another country.
  • Values are AR5 based and cannot be restated in AR6, because no breakdown by gas is published.
  • An as-sold and an as-consumed variant of one food (a powder and its rehydrated form) have different mass bases. Never convert one into the other.
  • The published consumer total and the sum of the stage detail differ slightly, because ADEME's two files split fossil emissions differently. On the climate total the gap stays under 0.5% for 2,284 of the 2,451 products and under 2% for all but one. It is wider on the fossil sub-total, where 86 products pass 2% and the largest gap is 6.1%; 85 of those 86 are cheeses. The missing share appears in no stage column of the file, so it is a boundary inside ADEME's own dataset. We keep both of ADEME's figures as published and correct neither.
  • Only edition 3.2 is loaded so far.
