Overview

GEMIS (Globales Emissions-Modell Integrierter Systeme) is a life-cycle model and database for energy, materials and transport. It is maintained by IINAS, the Internationales Institut für Nachhaltigkeitsanalysen und -strategien in Darmstadt. Next to the model, IINAS publishes a workbook of selected results, and that workbook is what we load: GEMIS version 5.2, data as of 1 December 2025. Both are on iinas.org.

The workbook has eleven data sheets: handy figures for fuels and grid electricity, heating per kWh of useful heat, heating per kWh of final energy, the German electricity mix from 2000 to 2024 at the power plant and at the local grid, electricity by plant type, a petrol and a diesel car, building materials, plastics, metals and food.

GEMIS downloads page, DE: "IINAS bietet GEMIS kostenlos zur freien Verwendung unter dem Creative Commons-Standard an"; EN: "IINAS provides GEMIS freely under the Creating Commons Standard" (sic). No CC variant, version or deed link is stated anywhere on iinas.org, in the workbook or in the model's documents. Free use is granted in words and no non-commercial or no-derivatives term appears anywhere, so publishing and modifying read as CC BY-SA would (the most restrictive CC licence free use admits). No written grant names an instrument, so sharing and embedding stay unclear until IINAS answers (gemis D-1).

Methodology

How this works
  • Values are CO2e, printed in grams per unit and served in kilograms. The workbook cites the IPCC's 2013 report: AR5 at 100 years, with fossil methane at 30 and nitrous oxide at 265. The printed totals reproduce that set.
  • The CO2, methane and nitrous oxide columns are gas masses. We store each as a CO2e part under those weights, which lets the AR6 version be derived. Other gases, such as the PFCs of aluminium smelting, are in the total but not split out, and carry into the AR6 version unchanged.
  • Biogenic CO2 is excluded.
  • Every value is a full life cycle: upstream chains, transport and materials, and the manufacture of the system that uses the energy (the boiler, the power plant, the car). Disposal is not included. No value is combustion only.
  • Heating comes on two bases. Per kWh of useful heat, the heating system's efficiency is inside the figure, so a heat pump and a gas boiler compare directly. Per kWh of final energy, the efficiency is 100% by definition. The two describe different services and must not be mixed.
  • Electricity at the power plant excludes grid losses. Electricity from the local grid includes them, and is about 3% higher.
  • Electricity is location-based: a production mix at the power plant, a consumption mix from the local grid. Combined heat and power is allocated between electricity and heat by energy content.
  • The reference year is each sheet's scenario year: 2020, 2015 for food, and each year of the two electricity series.

Scenario year: the year GEMIS models the process for, read from the sheet title (2020 on most sheets, 2015 on some) and, on the two German grid series, from each option's year (2000 to 2024).

What we import

  • All 151 result rows of the eleven data sheets: 119 factors and 151 values. The two electricity series are one factor each, with a value for each of 17 years from 2000 to 2024.
  • Units: kWh (95 values), kg (49), litre (6), and one natural gas value per kWh on the gross calorific basis. The natural gas value per cubic metre is served per litre. The workbook does not say whether that cubic metre is at normal or operating conditions.
  • Geography: Germany, for every value.
  • Each row is placed in our category tree. The publisher's sheet is kept as its own classification. There is no publisher data quality score.
  • Kept with each value but not served as separate fields: the air pollutants, the cumulative energy demand and the land use the workbook prints beside the greenhouse gases.
  • Names and comments are the publisher's German. For 18 rows the printed comment describes another row, so those rows carry no description.
  • Not imported: the GEMIS model and its database of some 10,000 processes, which ship in a binary format with no public reader. The German Environment Agency's ProBas portal distributes GEMIS processes under its own terms. They are not mixed in here.

Copyleft, on our reading. IINAS states that it "provides GEMIS freely under the Creating Commons Standard" (sic) and does not name which Creative Commons licence applies. Until it does, we apply attribution, a note of changes and share-alike to derived data. Using the factors for your own footprint is allowed. Publishing results and modifying or combining the data are allowed under those conditions. Sharing the values with customers and embedding them in a product are not explicitly granted: ask IINAS (info@iinas.org) before you do. If IINAS names a non-commercial or no-derivatives licence, these terms tighten. Attribution: "IINAS (2025): GEMIS 5.2, iinas.org/gemis". Last verified 2026-10-13.

Limitations

  • Tier split: 150 values at medium, set by the library prior, because the workbook publishes no quality score per value. One value is problematic: heating with liquefied petroleum gas per kWh of final energy prints 0.548 kg, above the same fuel's 0.338 kg per kWh of useful heat, which no boiler can produce. Heating oil and natural gas sit at 0.86 and 0.88 of their useful-heat figures. The correct value cannot be derived, so we serve it as printed and flagged. How tiers work: /docs/data-model/cleaning/.
  • Use the heating basis that matches your data. A useful-heat figure applied to fuel bought gives the wrong answer by the boiler's efficiency.
  • The workbook is a selection of a much larger model. A process missing here may exist in the GEMIS database.
  • IINAS replaces the workbook in place under the same address, without a new version number.
