Overview

CO2data.fi is the reference data of the Finnish assessment method for low-carbon construction. Syke publishes it as two machine-readable JSON files on syke.fi, updated several times a year:

  • the construction database: building materials, building services, default values per square metre for building types, transport, fuels and energy;
  • the infrastructure database: steel, concrete, plastic, stone and other products for infrastructure works, with transport, machine hours and landscaping, one value each.

We hold construction edition 1.01.010 and infrastructure edition 01.00.013, both published on 2026-09-25.

Methodology

How this works
  • Values are kilograms of CO2e per unit: per kg, metre, piece, litre, tonne-kilometre, m², machine hour, m² of heated net floor area, km or kWh.
  • Construction materials carry two values. The typical value is the default. The conservative value is a precautionary figure set by the assessment method: about 1.2 times the typical value on most materials, equal to it on the rest. It sits on the same factor as a second value marked scenario: conservative. For the building-services defaults of 12 building types (office, hospital, apartment building and others), Syke publishes only the conservative value, which is then the default.
  • Values follow the EN 15804 life cycle modules: A1-A3 product stage, A4 transport, A5 construction site, B4 replacement, B6 operational energy, C1-C4 end of life. Each material with a product stage and an end-of-life value gets one total of the two, built by us and checked to equal the sum of its parts (315 totals).
  • The carbon handprint (reuse, recycling, carbonation, carbon storage) is served as its own negative credit factor, never added to a total.
  • The served number is fossil CO2e. Biogenic carbon is carried beside it on 85 factors: the carbon taken up by bio-based materials such as timber, wood panels and cellulose insulation, and its release at end of life.
  • Fuels, freight and machine hours include the upstream supply of the fuel.
  • Electricity, district heat, district cooling and decentralised heating are scenario values for 2020 and 2025, per kWh delivered. Electricity, district heat and district cooling come under two ways of splitting combined heat and power: benefit allocation (the default) and energy allocation. Electricity is a consumption mix. Syke's projections for 2030 and later are not served.
  • Characterisation is IPCC AR5 for the 14 energy values, as Syke's energy report states. Elsewhere Syke does not publish the GWP version: it is unverified.
  • The reference year is the edition year, 2026, except for the energy scenarios, which carry their own year.
  • One correction: construction "Fossil gasoline" prints 2.85 kg per litre, the same as diesel. We serve 2.75, the value of Syke's fuels report, of the infrastructure database and of the previous edition.

Edition year: the year CO2data.fi published the database version (2026), except on the operational-energy (B6) factors, which carry their printed scenario year (2020 or 2025). No row has a data year.

What we import

  • 2,593 factors and 2,905 values, all for Finland: 926 construction factors with 1,238 values, 1,352 infrastructure factors with one value each, and the 315 totals.
  • Typical values are average data. Conservative values, fuels, transport, energy and building defaults are generic data.
  • Every factor has an open-climate.ai category. Syke's own classifications are kept: Talo 2000 building components (1,151 factors), the INFRA 2015 classification (831), Syke's construction categories (1,241) and infrastructure groups (1,352).
  • Names are Syke's own, in English, Finnish and Swedish. Descriptions are in English (938 factors) or Finnish (1,950). Usage definitions are generated.
  • No supplier is named: these are national generic values, including the infrastructure rows built from a single manufacturer's EPD.
  • No monetary factors and no data-quality score: Syke publishes neither.
  • Not imported: printed zeros, the total columns that add the biogenic value to the fossil one, end-of-life transport that repeats the A4 value, the carbon-storage handprint that repeats the biogenic value, the energy projections after 2026, the infrastructure values restated per kg, two products per track metre (no unit for it yet) and one infrastructure electricity value copied from an older construction edition.

Open, on our own reading of Syke's terms. Syke's service page states that the databases "are freely available for use as a machine-readable and continuously updated file in JSON format" and that they "can be integrated into emissions calculation tools". It names no licence for the files. Using the factors for your own footprint and publishing results are allowed, with the source named. Sharing the values with customers, embedding them in a product and modifying or combining them are not explicitly granted: confirm with Syke (CO2data@syke.fi) before you do. Attribution: "Source: CO2data.fi, Finnish Environment Institute (Syke)". Last verified 2026-10-12.

syke-co2data-terms

The contents of the databases are freely available for use as a machine-readable and continuously updated file in JSON format.

Limitations

  • Almost every value is rated medium quality. The 4 landscaping products Syke labels "unverified result" are rated low. How quality tiers are set.
  • The conservative value is a regulatory mark-up, not a measured product variant.
  • Values cannot be restated in AR6, because no breakdown by gas is published.
  • Infrastructure descriptions are mostly in Finnish.
  • Carbon handprint credits stand on their own and are not yet linked to their material.
  • Syke's own conversions between mass, volume and area are kept but not yet served as unit conversions.
