Overview

The Integrated Carbon Metrics (ICM) Embodied Carbon Life Cycle Inventory Database was built by the Sustainability Assessment Program at UNSW Sydney for the CRC for Low Carbon Living. It is published on UNSWorks with a methodology report, under DOI 10.26190/5df6aa5d5effd.

Most of its products are construction materials: bricks, concretes, steels, timber, plastics, glass, insulation and plumbing. It also covers Australian electricity by state and voltage, freight transport, water and sewer services, and disposal routes. The 2019 release is a one-off: its funding programme closed in 2019 and no new edition is expected.

Methodology

How this works
  • Every product has two values, both kg CO2e per unit. The process value comes from a physical life cycle inventory. The hybrid value adds what that inventory misses, such as services, finance, insurance, machinery and capital equipment, from an Australian input-output model.
  • The publisher recommends the hybrid value, and it is the default we serve. The hybrid is never below the process value; half of the products differ by less than 18%, but some by up to nine times.
  • The boundary is cradle to point of sale: raw material extraction through to the final point of sale.
  • The data year is 2015 for both the input-output and the emissions data.
  • The total counts CO2, methane and nitrous oxide, with IPCC AR4 100-year GWPs, following Australia's national inventory data. Only the combined total is published; we read it as excluding biogenic CO2, as that inventory does.
  • Electricity factors are location-based.

What we import

  • The 2019 release workbook: 646 factors, each with its process and hybrid value.
  • Values per m³ are served per litre, and values per MJ are served per kWh.
  • Every product is placed in Australia. The state of an electricity or coal factor is given in its name only.
  • Not imported: 10 products declared per m² per year, per metre per year or per second, which have no standard unit here, and the 11 supplementary factors in the methodology report, which use their own methods and boundaries.

Limitations

  • The data describes Australia in 2015, older than most libraries we serve.
  • Values are AR4 based and cannot be restated in AR6, because no breakdown by gas is published.
  • The 19 grid electricity factors range from 0.22 to 1.42 kg CO2e per kWh, depending on the state and voltage named in their labels. Choose the right one by name.
  • 15 pairs of products share a name and a unit but not a value, with gaps of up to 49%.
  • A disposal factor is its own product, not the end of life of the material it names.
  • A hybrid value includes more of the supply chain than a process-based factor from another library, so the two do not compare one to one.
