Overview

ÖKOBAUDAT holds Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and generic datasets for building materials, building services, transport, energy and end-of-life processes. It is the data basis of the German Assessment System for Sustainable Building (BNB) and is published for the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB) on oekobaudat.de.

Datasets follow the European standard EN 15804 and are published in the ILCD format through a public API.

Methodology

How this works
  • Values are global warming potential per declared unit (per kg, m³, m² or piece), reported per life cycle module: A1-A3 product stage, A4-A5 construction, B1-B7 use, C1-C4 end of life, and D, benefits beyond the system boundary.
  • The served number is GWP-fossil. For the 47 values without a fossil split we serve the net total and flag it.
  • Characterisation follows EN 15804 with IPCC AR5 100-year factors.
  • Each EPD gets one total over the modules it declares: cradle to grave when every A to C module is declared, cradle to gate for A1-A3 alone, and otherwise the EPD's own declared set. Module D is shown beside that total, never added to it.
  • The reference year is the dataset's own reference year.

Data year: the EPD's declared ILCD reference year, defaulting to 2024 where the EPD states none. Distinct from the published withdrawal horizon; and the 7 German grid-mix factors carry their data year in the activity label instead.

What we import

  • The OBD_2024_II stock, read through the ILCD API.
  • Every EPD and generic dataset with a GWP result: one factor per module, plus the EPD total.
  • Values declared per tonne or another amount are converted to the declared unit.
  • The declaration owner of an EPD is shown as its supplier. Generic datasets are modelled background data and name no supplier.
  • Not imported: template datasets with parameters, datasets whose declared unit cannot be resolved, datasets with every module at zero, forward projections, and the EN 15804 indicators other than GWP.
  • English names are ÖKOBAUDAT's own; French names are machine translated.

Open. The ÖKOBAUDAT terms of use allow use free of charge and without restriction, with attribution: "Source: ÖKOBAUDAT (OBD_2024_II), BBSR / BMWSB. Individual EPDs © their respective programme operators / declaration owners."

The terms name no standard licence and do not address derived data or commercial use explicitly.

Limitations

  • An industry EPD is declared by a trade association, not by a manufacturer. The supplier shown is the declarant.
  • Values are AR5 based and cannot be restated in AR6, because no breakdown by gas is published.
  • Mass intensities above 100 kg CO2e per kg are marked problematic, except in module B1 where refrigerant leaks can reach that level.
  • EPDs withdrawn from a later stock are not yet retired here. Check an EPD's validity date before use.

Changelog

  • 2026-09-16: process datasets placed on the life cycle stage they cover.
  • 2026-09-15: one total per EPD, with module D beside it; generic datasets no longer name a supplier.
  • 2026-09-07: values declared per tonne served per kg.
  • 2026-09-04: EN 15804 modules grouped into life cycle totals.
  • 2026-07-24: stock OBD_2024_II loaded.
